There are many, many people out there with great resources on how to educate yourself, your kids, and how to get involved. This is a list of where I’m getting started, but I’m also including links to some of the resources I used to compile this (which are helpful especially if you have kids over the age of 3). I will continue to update it as I learn about additional resources.

Reading some of these books and articles made me very uncomfortable, because it forced me to come face to face with A) times when I’ve done or said something unintentionally discriminatory due to my own ignorance, or B) contributed to racism through my inaction. But: this is an opportunity for growth - an opportunity that is in itself a white privilege - and growth is often uncomfortable.

There are two categories here: books with non-white characters, and books that explicitly talk about racism. BOTH are important. From author Christine Taylor-Butler:

I'm a parent, author, and a former college interviewer. Please hear me - in this time of stress people want to 'flood' their kids with books about racism. Please provide 20 joyful books for every one book on racism. They also need to know POC kids are like every other kid.”

Books that talk about racism and anti-racism:

“We March” by Shane W. Evans

“Something Happened in our Town” by Marianne Celano

“Not my Idea” by Anastasia Higginbotham (temporary free download via Dottir Press)

Books with non-white characters:

“Saturday”by Oge Mora

“So Much” by Trisha Cook

“Hair Love” by Matthew A. Cherry
